9 - Belém Tower and Monastery of Jerónimos
Built in the 16th century as a fortress to guard Lisbon’s harbour, it’s a symbol of the Age of Discovery. Explore the tower’s carved stonework and climb to the top for panoramic views of the Tagus River. During December, it’s beautifully lit. From there it’s a short walk to the monastery built to commemorate Vasco da Gama’s voyage to India. The church interior is awe-inspiring.
